Mounting for ADAHARS and Autopilot Servos

Mounts ADAHARS in tail section.  Also installed mounts for Autopilot Servos in Wing and tail section.

Back to the Engine

So that engine core (O-320-D3G 160HP Lycoming) I talked about last year. With the assistance of two wonderful friends (OK maybe they were leading the way and I was the assistant) this engine was torn down to see what was inside. Thought was that perhaps we could use the case and a few parts for the new build. After all, it has nearly 10,000 hours on it. There shouldn't have been much salvageable. To all of our surprise, The Crank shaft was almost new. Nearly no wear. The Cam shaft was used but was in good condition. Was stated that we could very well reassemble the the lower engine as is and it would be just fine!!! The cylinders were another story as they were right full of rust. We knew this going in though. I will be buying 4 new cylinder assemblies.

The decision was made to send all the components out to Aircraft Specialties and DivCo aviation machine shops to have everything checked out professionally.

Here are the Pics I have on the subject.

Flap Build

As the previous Wing builder damaged one flap, I have the task of finishing this up. Quick work to deburr, prime and rivet.

I Bought Wings

So this will speed things considerably. On my way home from Oshkosh this year, a friend sent me a text at 2AM in the morning. He let me know that there was a set of RV-7 wings listed for sale on VansAirforce.com in Atlanta GA. This was extremely convenient because at that exact time (2AM) I was driving through Atlanta on my way home. Unfortunate though, I didn't see the text until I got home (Tampa, FL) the next morning.

Anyway I immediately called and sent my deposit to hold the wings. Debbie and I went on a road trip the next weekend to pick them up. It was a great find!!

Here is a link to the online log showing the build process for the wings.

Fiberglass Canopy Bow

I decided against the aluminum canopy bow. I decided that it might be better for aerodynamics to follow the original Van's design for this piece.

Here are the strips that will form the bow. this will be bonded directly to the wind screen.

Someone decided to take my picture here.

The canopy is used as a form to get the shape correct

After cure, the slider canopy is opened. this will be cut and sanded to final shape.

Forward Canopy Fiberglass

Morning all. Catching up on my posting as I have quite a back log of pictures to get through here. I have been working on the canopy. After installing the actual wind screen, I need to dress it in with a few layers of fiberglass and a "bondo-like" material to make it a happy aerodynamic shape.

Starting with the Fiberglass Layup. Strips are cut to transition between the aluminum deck and the plexi. I did around 6 layers progressively getting smaller while building up.

Then we use AwlFair which is a two part filler material which won't shrink. This will be applied and sanded many times to get the final smooth shape needed. Think airflow.
